Part & Parcel | 2019-11-08 | Cervantes’ Other Side, Denver, CO [SBD/AUD Matrix]

Someday I’ll get my ish together, but until then…enjoy Part & Parcel headlining Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom(Other Side)!

November is the month to give thanks, and what better way to do that than with a bit of philanthropy? And why not enjoy some top-notch Denver bluegrass while you’re at it? Thankfully, Part & Parcel has got you covered with their 4th annual charitable concert, The Corduroy Classic. A night chock full of some of the best local musicians Denver has to offer, all contributing to an event aimed at supporting an organization named “RIP Medical Debt“, which helps purchase medical debt for the purposes of forgiving it. This year’s event helped purchase around $250,000 of medical debt to be forgiven, which is a remarkably noble cause, easing an endemic issue in our society.

The show was presented in two different sets. The first was an all original set that offered up some debut original performances in the form of set opener, “Barstool Prophet”, and the closer (which is currently untitled) to sandwich the handful of Part & Parcel classics. Envy Alo guitarist Kevin Hinder took on lead guitar duties, providing colorful phrasings to add nuance to existing song structures or highly technical shredfest leads when called upon to do so. The first set contained a couple of beefed-up tunes in the form of fan-favorites “Fall From Your Feet” and “Lost & Found”, both of which featured locked-in, highly dynamic jams.

The second set was a celebratory mash-up of covers and local jamband favorite sit-ins, with set list notes so long they almost eclipse this recap. The eclectic song selection was filled with highlights, like former Part & Parcel guitarist/vocalist, Brandon Jay, kicking off the set with the high-energy “Ballroom Blitz”, and a tribute to New Orleans funk legend, Dr. John, with “Gilded Splinters”, featuring a guitar duel between Sister Sparrow guitarist, Sasha Brown, and slide guitarist, Cody Russel of The Drunken Hearts, which would end up being the biggest jam of the evening. There was a stirring cover of the Gillian Welch ode to doing better, with a cover of “Look At Miss Ohio”, featuring Emily Clark and the ladies from The Sweet Lillies on additional vocals. This continued with what I think is the best night-driving song of all time, Bob Segar’s “Night Moves”, which once again featured vocals from The Sweet Lillies. The entire show closed out with a powerful encore of Train’s “Drops Of Jupiter” and The Grateful Dead’s “Loose Lucy”, the latter of which contained the appropriately appreciative lyrics, “Thank you for a real good time”. Indeed.

The Corduroy Classic is a celebration for a good cause and an annual tradition that has become as much a part of the Denver live music November calendar as The Fillmore’s Last Waltz. On a slightly smaller scale, but with just as big a heart. Kudos to the members of Part & Parcel and all that contributed to making this year’s event a success.
