I’m so happy…’cause today I’ve got new tunes….to cure your blues…check out my pull of Pickin’ On Nirvana!
Another gift from Cervantes Other Side‘s weekly Bluegrass Thursday event – members of Big Time Rascals, Ragged Union, Shaky Hand String Band and Burn It Blue came together to pay tribute to the most legendary grunge band of all time. The group did a fantastic job of putting a grassy spin on these classic tunes, never simply replicating a song but changing just enough without obstructing their original spirit. They even found space to jam; I never thought I’d see a deep type II bluegrass version of Nirvana’s “Drain You” but I saw it and it was incredible. Renditions of Vaselines tune “Son Of A Gun” and the haunting “Something In The Way” also found space to flex their bluegrass chops and take these songs places they haven’t often gone. I especially loved the way they were able to work heavier Nirvana tunes like “Aneurysm”, “Territorial Pissings” and “Sliver” into more classic bluegrass songs with their own personality. Kudos to the members who teased the classic “Nirvana: Unplugged” banter in between songs. That record was such a big part of my musical experience. Even the banter is burned into my mind. The whole show is a treat for any Nirvana fan. Quality turned out great as well – another soundboard/audience matrix. Thanks to sound engineer Mateo for the patch!
