Pigeons Playing Ping Pong | 2019-05-02 | Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO [AUD]

Baby – I got something for ya… Pigeons Playing Ping Pong co-headlining Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre!

Making their second appearance co-headlining the mighty Red Rocks, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong brought the party to the 70 rows of the Morrison Amphitheatre. Waiting in line to get the coveted taper spot, I couldn’t help but notice the incredible amount of Pigeons fans showing up to support the group on this monumental day, each donning the ubiquitous pigeon on hat-pins, t-shirts, and more. Their presence was felt even harder when the band took the stage for the the second set of the evening.

Pigeons’ music is bursting at the seams with energetic positivity, and it’s difficult to put into words how well that translates to a fully engaged crowd on a beautiful Colorado day. As the slow build and opening notes of “Poseidon” ring out, you can hear the cheers of pure joy in the recording. Smiles were contagious as all four members, alongside the dancing fans, appeared to be having the time of their lives partying with The Flock on the Rocks. Like pretty much every Pigeons show, the party never stopped, and when the second song in the set is, “Yo Soy Fiesta”, which literally translates to “I am Party”, how could it? Songs like “Something For Ya”, “Walk Outside”, and “Melting Lights” have these big anthemic choruses that bring the crowd together in a collective singing and dancing experience that feels akin to a loving wedding. You see friends, you see family, and you think, “This is it. This is what it’s about, right?” No big, extended jams, as the band kept the improv moments compact, favoring a more accessible crowd experience. Still, “Poseidon” had a brief but stirring jamtronica mid-section, which ushered in the soaring guitar lead, as did “Sunny Day” and “Walk Outside”, also featuring some compelling psychedelic guitar work from Jeremy Schon.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong’s second appearance at Red Rocks was a celebration, and lucky for fans, celebrating is what Pigeons does best. Their strongest talent is their ability to grasp the moment with songwriting that delivers exactly what it promises: a party every time. Yo Soy Fiesta indeed.
