For night 2 of their two-night-run at Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple Raq shot out the gate with a first set filled with improv. For starters, a massive jam in the absurdly awesome love-song “Welcome To The Donkey Show”. The improv segment fully deconstructs to a swampy Stoops/Michetti riff-off propelled by the newly minted rhythm section which featured Jay Lane of Primus / Ratdog fame. After the explosive start, the band eased the crowd into the set with a smooth rendition of the Billy Cobham classic “Red Baron”. Following the stellar jazz excursion the band then launched into the upbeat “Walking In Circles” which contained another big jam with several patient builds with huge peaks before fully melting into a misty haze. The band then segued into a cover of ZZ Top’s “Cheap Sunglasses” much to the delight of the crowd. Even this cover had a funky improv segment which through the frenzied build and epic peak explored the tune more thoroughly than ZZ Top likely ever envisioned. The outro spotlighted some excellent drumming from the Jay which helped find a new ending to the classic rock tune. The set then closed with another Raq staple, “Hannah Can” which delivered its own big moments to close out the set. The first set perfectly exemplified what I love about Raq. Great songwriting, big choruses, fun atmosphere and jams galore.
The second set started as strong as the first with a riveting rendition of “Carbohydrates Are The Enemy”. I’m a sucker for songs with a strong composed peak and this one has a doozy. The whole tune feels like a build until the huge outro start-stop solo segment. It’s a really great way to start a second set. The train kept rolling with another cover, this time, a bit funkier as the band ran through the James Gang tune “Funk #49”. This eventually segued into the always sensual “Sweet Cream Sugar” which had the crowd dancing and laughing at the same time. The band then covered the Wang Chung tune “Dance Hall Days” which seemed to serve as a nice cool-down of nostalgia after the set’s shenanigans. The set closed incredibly strong with a jammed out “Will Run” which sometimes is sandwiched with another tune but was given the full proper experience to close out the second set. After the band didn’t come back for an encore night one I wasn’t expecting them to do so for night two but the crowd begged and they acquiesced and performed a raucous rendition of “Whipping Post” which was certainly a strong statement to close out the fantastic two-night-run.
Both nights were filled with such awesome moments and just further solidified my initial belief that Raq kicks ass. Bands should take note – each Raq set rarely goes much longer than an hour but are so filled with great songwriting and awesome jamming that it leaves you wanting more. I know I do. Can’t wait for them to come baq!
