Reed Mathis Trio | 2018-01-20 | Cervantes: The Other Side, Denver, CO

I missed #MusicMonday and #TaperTuesday but it’s just regular old Wednesday but how about some #FreeMusic from Reed Mathis Trio at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom(The Other Side)!

“What’s up you guys! I like music.” is a poignant way for Reed to open this show. As a purveyor of psychedelic exploration, Reed is no stranger to improvisation. In fact, he takes every opportunity to profess his love for the art of musical exploration. His positivity is truly infectious and it’s reflected in the art he creates. This evening, he brought along Todd Stoops and Josh Raymer to help explore the depths of several covers, a Reed original and a new Electric Beethoven piece. Not to mention plenty of improvisation. One of my personal highlights was their take on Radiohead’s “Knives Out” which paid solid tribute to the original while injecting their own unique sound in the flow. The Reed penned “One Condition’s Enough” had a very Dylan-esque vibe especially with Reed’s vocals caterwauling over the funky keys. Next up was a beautiful version of “Reuben & Cherise” which got into a real swampy dark jam.

After the dead tune it was time for the Electric Beethoven segment. “Opus 132 > Ode To Joy” gave a brief glimpse of the beauty that is Electric Beethoven. Beethoven songs re-imagined with through improvisational lens become majestic masterpieces that transcend genre. I highly recommend you catch a full Electric Beethoven show if you ever can, they’re incredible music experiences.

The set then closed out with a soulful take on a NOLA classic “Who Took The Happiness Out?” by the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Solid song selection throughout the entire night and this final song was no exception. The band really seemed to gel as Reed took a bit of a back seat to Todd’s fiery key work over Josh Rayner’s incredible ability to read the direction of a jam and change things up seamlessly. It was an incredibly strong finish to an already incredibly strong set. While the band didn’t play a long time they packed every moment with as much as they feasibly could and left the crowd enthralled.
