How is it ALREADY SUNDAY?! Let’s turn this regular-old Sunday into a #StringSunday with some #FreeMusic from River Valley Rangers opening things up at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom(Other Side)!
Out the gate, the River Valley Rangers seemed shot-out-of-a-cannon as they opened their set with a fiery version of their tune “Bounty” which featured just about every member trading off explosive solos. No sign of letting up on the accelerator after another speedy tune “River Of Life” featured some more incendiary fiddle and mandolin work. Next up was “Mind Your Head” which carried a foreboding feel throughout the song and a very well written / catchy chorus. Their tunes have classic bluegrass themes as they sing about mountains, rivers, girls with two first names and of course, my favorite, whiskey. No bluegrass band worth their weight in barley is anything without a solid song about whiskey and lucky for RVR – they got one in “Whiskey By The Fire”! One of my personal highlights was their take on Radiohead’s “There There”. The bluegrass spin fit the song nicely, especially during the song’s hook “Just because you feel it doesn’t mean its there” and subsequent fiddle riff. Another highlight was the 11+ minute instrumental “Taking Names” which served up more fantastic playing from the entire band. Real talented group of pickers that really go for every song with extreme passion and solid execution. They’ll be playing at Moe’s in Englewood 4/18 so you should check ’em out if you’re looking to get down with some strings!
