It’s #tapertuesday which is my favorite of the alliterated days! Check out my Shaky Hand String Band pull!
Opening things up at Cervantes Other Side for the weekly Bluegrass Thursday event, Shaky Hand String Band came out swinging’ with a solid rendition of Bob Dylan’s ode to quitting, “Maggie’s Farm”. The song introduced all the members of the band both through alternating verses and dueling solos. Next up was the instrumental “Switch” which started off ominously before kicking’ into a raucous groove which again showed off the band’s prowess on the strings. The centerpiece of the set for me was the soulful “All I Can Take” which features a very catchy riff, accessibly singable verses and a whole lot of bluegrass jamming. The song broke down into a haunting groove, slowly and patiently building itself with layer after layer of added tempo and melody before peaking and reprising itself. The set also had some great covers, taking on songs by legends like Larry Keel and Gillian Welch while also giving a nod to jamband heroes Phish with their cover of “My Sweet One”. The set closing rendition of The Cure’s “Lovesong” was my favorite of their covers. The fiddle playing the famed Robert Smith riff fit perfectly and was a fantastic segue-way into the evening which was based around throwback nostalgia.
