…And on the 2nd day of Beanstalk Music Festival 2018 Scott Hachey said “Let there be Ghost Light“. And we all saw the Ghost Light and it was good. Check out this epic pull for #MusicMonday!
From the haunting opening notes, walking over a cryptic snare and the beautiful crooning vocal line…it was clear Ghost Light had one of the most impassioned sounds of the entire weekend. The band didn’t stop for a second, seguing the entirety of their set and treating the crowd to a truly transcendent night of music. The beauty of their improv is how it manages to keep a rootsy-soulful center while flirting mercilessly with a more raucous and at times abstract tone. The jams always felt driven and purposeful and the playing from all 5 players was selfless and felt incredibly polished considering the bulk of it was improvised. There is no meandering here. I usually try to pick out some highlights and talk about them but frankly this entire set is a highlight. From start to finish this was one of the most inspired sets of the weekend, hands down.
But if I had to pin one down – just to give you a taste, go to about 21:30 on “Lead Weight” and hear how that outro develops and shifts in the last song. The band organically builds the tension – Tom Hamilton’s beautiful lead work begins to propel the segment to a higher level. It begins to peak…but then the band starts to pick up the pace…Tom begins to settle it back in but the band keeps kicking it back up. At it’s most feverish point, there is a trade-off from Tom’s lead to Holly’s and the way that segment ends and segues into the ending of “Untitled (D Riff)” is possibly the most bad ass piano riff I’ve ever heard. I’m still getting goosebumps listening to it. The whole set is basically that moment, again and again. Truly epic performance, hats off to Ghost Light – I cannot wait to see what the future holds.
