This #MusicMonday will make you a believer – check out The Jauntee headlining Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom(Other Side)!
The Jauntee pulled out all the stops for the final night of their monthly residency at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom(Other Side) – pulling out new songs, new cover and even a new guitar. Starting things off was the punctuated “Fear” which contained a brief blissed out jam to ease everyone into the set. Next up was the electric debut of The Meters’ groove “Tippi Toes”. The band maintained stellar communication throughout the tune, shifting through segments effortlessly before it eventually seguing into “When The Love Is” which saw the first appearance of the house Languedoc guitar. The guitar stuck around for a few more tunes including a nice “Mammoth Relaxes” which was one of the big jam highlights of the evening. Afterwards the band debuted a new original called “Peepin’ Steeno” which seemed to have multiple personalities – at times feeling like a slow prog-rock slog before shifting into an island reggae tune before showing off hints of bluegrass and even launching into its own spacey little jam. After a solid rendition of “Valley Girl” the band launched into the highlight of the evening. A monstrous 20+ minute “Renaissance Man” which contained some more deep-space psychedelic improv playing like only The Jauntee knows how. Eventually this segued into a debut cover of The Beatles’ song “Tomorrow Never Knows” which was another journey in and of itself. After hearing both Cycles and The Jauntee cover this tune, I think it is my new favorite Beatles cover, especially if a band is willing to take it deep.
This eventually segued into the Brother Toaster original “Good Day Toothache” which hit me in just the right place that night. The way the song explains personal growth through the lens of getting a root canal is very clever and the line “It hurts to change, but it hurts even more to stay the same” I think is brilliant. It’s their incredible musicianship and smart songwriting that differentiates The Jauntee from other bands in the scene and will always elevate their shows to the next level. A fantastic way to end their monthly residency at Cervantes.
