Last night I had a dream that we had a recording of The Jauntee rocking out at Beanstalk Music Festival; luckily that dream is a reality!
The final day of Beanstalk is always bittersweet. As most fun things go, the weekend ends as quickly as it begins, but the final day always welcomes a plethora of talented artists to put on one final hurrah before we all need to return to the normal day-to-day grind. On this final day, things were kicked off by one of the most intriguing bands in the scene, The Jauntee.
The Jauntee started things off with their take on the classic Meters tune, “Hey Pocky Way”. The jam proved to be one of the most compelling of their set, immediately whisking themselves into a steadfast groove, enveloped in funk chord phrasings from guitarist Caton Sollenberger intermingling with the foundation of whispy keys work laid out by keyboardist Tyler Adams. The jam floats along the valley with a dreamlike aura before melting into the band’s original “Space Monkeys”, which also contained a jam with a similar ethereal vibe. Afterwards, they performed the crowd favorite “Colorado”, followed by the filthy combination of “Dirty George -> Dirty Job”; the former injected some extra funk into the set, while the latter added another fluttery manic jam segment. The set then continued with the second big improvisation vehicle, a rendition of their original, “Old Thompson”. The tune featured another venture in the type II jam arena with a patient layering of psychedelia and a massive peak at around the 7min 40 mark, helping wake up fans catching their first set of the day.
The set then continued with another Jauntee classic, “Good ‘Ol Boy”, about the mythic “Steano”, a tune with a catchy chorus and fun rhyming scheme, peppered with ragtime licks. The band then closed out the set with a duo of tunes: the first a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Stone Free”, which allowed guitarist Caton Sollenberger another opportunity to stretch his shred legs over the rolling bass of John Loland, and punctuated by Scott Ferber’s steadfast drumming. After an improv segment dripping psychedelic textures and overdrive, the band segued into their original, “Have You Ever”, featuring Will Trask on added percussion. The tune highlights The Jauntee’s ability to craft accessible songs that still take a walk down the improvisational path without being forced. For The Jauntee, type II jamming comes naturally.
The Jauntee are absolute masters of their craft. When it comes to improvisation, there are almost no bands that are able to create such engaging jams at such a high and consistent level. Whether one of their jams lasts 5 minutes or 15 minutes, their artistry and dedication shine through in ways that are always compelling to the listener. They create soundscapes that wrap you in a cocoon of experimental creativity that you’ll never want to leave. Their songwriting is singularly theirs, relying on drummer/vocalist Scott Ferber’s unique delivery to separate them from the bunch, writing melodically compelling songs with sometimes amusing lyrics that are able to both appeal to pop-sensibilities while still providing the vehicle for exploration. Their style borrows the best parts of their peers in an idiosyncratic mold that sounds quirky and distinct.
