They call me the Doctor – Dr. Funk and I got whatchya need – a new recording of The Main Squeeze at Beanstalk Music Festival!

With a massive throw down under their belt from day one of the festival, The Main Squeeze had big shoes to fill–their own. The previous day’s set included a massive cover of Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter” that seemed insurmountable as far as a highlight goes, but this was not the band’s first rodeo, or even their first Beanstalk. Lucky for fans, they returned on the second day to deliver another set filled with its own outstanding moments.

The second set of the weekend had a big party feel, songs like “Whiskey And Cocaine” and “Dr. Funk” got people grooving on the band’s blend of blues funk while tunes like “Make It Right” provided an opportunity for some breathing room with its extended intro before keeping the party going with it’s upbeat synth-driven melody. The second half of the set paid homage to the jam scene with some of the band’s longest performances of the weekend. This started with an impassioned rendition of “Sun Goes Down”, a dynamic number with a soulful interplay between lead singer Corey Frye’s vigorous and powerful vocals and guitarist Max Newman’s bold and high-octane leads. The number had breadth, expanding itself enough to provide proper space for the members to make their statements effectively.  However, the biggest statement of the set would come from another cover, this time with a little help from Aqueous guitarist, Mike Gantzer, who sat-in for a show-stopping take on the Allman Brothers classic, “Whipping Post”. The syncopation between the band and Gantzer was mesmerizing and resulted in one of the best sit-ins, as well as covers, of the entire weekend.

If the band would have called it a night right there, they would have still captivated an entire festival’s worth of fans, but they treated those very fans to one last number, “I’ll Take Another”. The most expansive of the set, the song featured a patient intro with a solemn vocal performance that culminated in an explosive riff and hail. The verses had a more reserved, almost prog-rock type cadence, which morphed into the jam that featured impressive keys work from Ben “Smiley” Silverstein that became intertwined with the guitar lead, producing the final peak of the set with fierce precision.

The Main Squeeze are masters at crafting sets with incredibly dynamic moments, punctuated by powerful vocal deliveries and raging guitar riffs. Their original material carries itself with conviction and a boldness that gives crowds a presence of mind in something new, and their ability to reinterpret classic covers is in a league of its own. Their live show is a spiritual experience that is both inspiring and refreshing, and even after experiencing it twice in one weekend–as The Main Squeeze may say–I’ll take another.
