This is a message to the lonely hearts: We know who we are, and we got a recording of The Main Squeeze performing at Beanstalk Music Festival!

As the first day of the ten-year anniversary of Beanstalk turned into the first night, fans were treated to one final set before the festival host, Magic Beans, would take the stage for the first time that weekend. That final set was delivered up by The Main Squeeze.

The Main Squeeze finds their musical niche snuggled between jam funk and soulful rock, delivering a sincere evolution of the blend, driven by the ferociously smooth and impassioned vocals of front man, Corey Frye. From the opening acapella sung words of the set, the beginning lyrics to the band’s “Message To The Lonely”, Corey Frye’s singing pierces through the valley, calling out to those looking for the next musical experience Beanstalk has to offer. Those who indulged were not disappointed.

The Main Squeeze’s first set of the weekend was stockpiled with highlights. The opening tune, “Message To The Lonely”, has an infectious melody that carries the song throughout its journey, reconciling itself with the chorus and its message of hope. The following song, “Colorful Midst”, has a silky R&B vibe mixed with a swathe of neo-soul, showcasing a beautiful interplay between Corey Frye’s expansive vocal range and guitarist Maxamillian Newman’s spacious guitar work. Songs like “Where Do We Go” and “Spines Pt. 1” include more synth-based rock elements, deepening the band’s genre-bending sound. However, there may be no better highlight than the band’s take on the Led Zeppelin eerie classic, “No Quarter”. The song has been covered by many bands many times, and at first, it would seem this cover would be relatively direct. After about three minutes, the band appears to be doing an instrumental version of the song, until the vocals begin to softly croon in. As they build into the intensity of the chorus, you feel in your bones that something big is going to happen, and once Corey’s vocals hit their apex, they rip your soul out through your throat. From there, the next 7-8 minutes or so are an epic journey through the tune, dripping in psychedelia and dynamic bursts of intensity, with moments that go from borderline silence to colossally thunderous hails of emphatic vocal fury. This was punctuated by another incendiary guitar solo, wrapping the tune in a mythic aura and sending it to the crowd with its due vehemence.

The Main Squeeze are a force of musical nature with a paradoxical delivery of savage intensity and dulcet sincerity. It lands like a soft caress and punch to the gut, each of which feel like exactly what you need. This being their first set, I definitely know that after the dust settled I was left thinking, “I would like another”.
