You may not have ways like a crawfish but I have a recording of Tom Pevear performing at Larimer Lounge to help you change your ways!
One of my favorite things about recording live shows has been the veritable schooling of music history. I’ve learned countless songs through a well-executed cover and constantly am learning fun, new facts about songs and their original performers. In this sense, Tom Pevear’s set opening for Kind Hearted Strangers and Famous Men was a master class in fingerstyle blues music. As Kind Hearted Strangers front man Marc Townes put it before asking him up to perform with them, “It’s the origin of all this right here.”
Tom’s finger-picking style is a tribute to the legendary 19th century bluesman that came before – artists such as Mississippi John Hurt and Big Bill Broonzy, who popularized the percussively intricate style that would mark the origins of rock music. His execution of the material is spectacular, nailing the various fills and iconic blues licks with a confident flow and soulful attack, and breathing life into songs nearing a century old. A true testament to the popularity of a genre that has inspired so much of popular Western music. So, if you’re in the mood to visit the roots of rock ‘n’ roll, go no further than this set, as Tom Pevear has provided the perfect sampling of artists that made blues music what is… the father of contemporary rock music. That is something to be cherished and remembered, thanks to Tom for keeping that history alive.
