The name says it all – the power trio of Robert Walter, Eddie Roberts, and Adam Deitch is a musical dynamo espousing high energy funk textured with soulful jazz licks and Latin-inspired beats, the result of which is a captivating display of musical prowess that hasn’t come together in quite some time.
As Eddie Roberts mentioned in the opening moments of the set, the band was initially concocted in 2011 and performed a small run of five dates. The first show, which was the band’s live debut, was on the Cervantes stage and remained the only club show the band had performed up until this evening. Eight years and some change later, the band decided to get together once more to record a new album and to play this show, all within the course of a few days. It goes without saying, but I do enjoy saying it: Denver live music fans are spoiled.
The show was a powerful display of musicians who are so accustomed to improvisation that they manage to create a sound that has incredibly loose energy while performing with such tight execution that it’s hard to imagine this band hasn’t performed live together in almost a decade. Eddie went as far as to say they had written and recorded 11 new songs the day before and that they would all be receiving their live debut that evening. This is in line with how the band had traditionally been creating music; back in 2018 they released four songs through Eddie’s Color Red label, which they recorded in small one-or-two-take sessions that helped cultivate the band’s confidently care-free swagger. The band performed all four songs from that 2018 session in addition to the plethora of new material they were eager to share with the enthusiastic Friday night crowd. New tunes included “Poison Dart”, which highlights both Eddie and Robert’s alternating bars over a laid-back groove that steadily guides each stanza, eventually culminating each time in a satisfying and punctuated progression that doesn’t quit. There were also some more aggressively funky songs, like “Chum City”, which featured Nick Gerlach on saxophone accentuating the rhythm, as well as the more aggressively jazzy tunes, like “Fancy Free”, which coincidentally also featured Nick Gerlach on saxophone, this time adding that sultry texture that makes jazz instrumentals truly sing. No matter the mood, WRD always seems to have just the right groove.
WRD provided a set of music that felt like a jam session between longtime friends, each trying to put a little extra razzle on their line, just to see the others react. Their compositions have a soulful spirit that hit with the ferocity of whichever end of the jazz funk pendulum they’re swinging, and they all land with an execution that can only come from tempered experience. Like a comet that only comes around once a decade, they are not to be missed. Hopefully it doesn’t take another 8 years for them to return.
