Adam Deitch & The Midnight Marauders | 2019-06-29 | Rancho Del Rio, Bond, CO [SBD/AUD Matrix]

Brother, brother, brother, Lucien, you’re like no other. Listen very close ’cause I got Adam Deitch and The Midnight Marauders throwing down at Beanstalk Music Festival!

On the final day of the Beanstalk Music Festival, Adam Deitch and The Midnight Marauders took on the lofty goal of paying tribute to one of the most iconic hip-hop groups of all time, A Tribute Called Quest. The tribute however was a bit more nuanced than performing straight covers of the classic hip hop tunes, instead opting to take on the originals that would end up being sampled and turned into their own seminal works, while adding their own jazz-hop flair. With help from fellow Lettuce bandmate, Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff, as well as members of The Motet, Joey Porter on keys, Garrett Sayers on bass, and Gabe Mervine on trumpet, Deitch put together a powerhouse group that brought all the jazz, hip-hop, and funk Rancho Del Rio could need for the next three summers. The set was a laid-back, vibe-out performance with a tight execution and confident swagger, led by Deitch’s break-beat rhythm, and flavored by Smeeans’ smooth licks, Joey Porter’s keys subtly shading each progression, funky bass tones of Garrett Sayers and the Motet horns of Gabe Mervine putting all the finishing touches on the band’s refined sound. Each musician played without ego, making sure each of their contributions added substance and not weight, while the set list was curated with a true fan’s understanding of the artist’s catalogue.

Adam Deitch and The Midnight Marauders brought the house down with their set. Their intelligent take on the songs that helped make A Tribe Called Quest the distinguished hip-hop pioneers that they were brought a certain refinement to a weekend filled with debauchery, late-night partying, and too many White Claws.

Thank you to Adam Deitch & The Midnight Marauders and Beanstalk Music Festival for being cool with taping/sharing shows. Go see live music and support your local artists! #spacetapes
