You can call me butter rum, but I’d rather you just check out Goose holding down the Look Out Stage at Beanstalk Music Festival.

On the final day of the Beanstalk Music & Mountains Festival, Goose took the reigns as jam purveyors on the Look Out Stage for the tweener sets that would splice up the time between Main Stage acts. While plagued with technical issues that affected a few really ripping jams, Goose still managed to put together five tweener sets of engaging jams, party covers, and solid originals.

The first set started off with the island-themed “Butter Rum”, a bouncy number that proved a solid opener, enticing newcomers to dance. They followed this up with the Grateful Dead classic, “Me And My Uncle”, a reliable choice for the Colorado crowd and another solid reason to dance. Next up, the band performed one of their most accessible songs, and one of their singles, “Time To Flee”. With seemingly nonsensical lyrics, the chorus is still remarkably catchy and brought on the first true jam of the show. The band has a superb knack for finding their jam pocket and finding their peaks and valleys with confidence. At one point during this jam, there was some feedback that the band just rolled with and peaked part of the jam on. The set then closed out with a nu-grassy composition, “Flodown”.

The second set started with another incredibly catchy tune, the melodic verses and funky rhyhtm of “Mudhaven”. The tune contained its own forest of psychedelic moments and ripping guitar solos and just managed to avoid the first power issue that would plague the stage. After checking, “is we good?”–the band was back in business… or so they thought. The second of their singles, “All I Need” proceeded to have three separate power outages that would eventually end the tune and segue into the Creedance Clearwater Revival cover, “Green River”, a fitting choice considering our proximity to the Colorado river. The set then closed out with a powerful take on the Talking Heads’ “Crosseyed And Painless”, complete with a slow-fake-out intro that broke the song with maximum impact.

The third set not only contained the biggest jam of the show, it was the only song played that set! The band rocked an almost 20-minute version of their song “Driven”, a psychedelic epic with riveting peaks, blissful breakdowns, and of course… a power failure towards the end. Luckily, this was only the PA, and like the true rock stars they are, the band was still able to close out the set strong.

The fourth set brought the party, starting things off with “So Ready”, a tune dripping with funk and nuanced with synth rock sensibilities. The song featured a stirring jam that teased Latin rhythms, and another impressive lead guitar performance. The funk continued with the slap-bass intro of “Yeti”, which quickly transformed into its true jamtronica rhythm. The tune eventually segued into the crowd favorite and party staple, Eddy Grant’s “Electric Avenue”.

The final set opened with another compelling jam in the original “Tumble”. Sadly, this was affected a bit by some power outages, but the band responded in stride, and the result is clear. Power or no power, this band can jam. The set then closed out with the combination of “Arcadia -> Hot Tea”, a celebratory finale for a day filled with trials that the band was always able to meet and rise above.

Goose kept their composure during less than ideal circumstances. Their ability to launch into jams on a moment’s notice certainly played out well for them in instances when they were cutting in and out of peak moments and still managing to compose sets full of well-written originals, fun covers, and jams galore, all amounting to a compelling musical offering in between main stage helpings.

Show Notes: These sets were performed on the Lookout Stage on the third day of the seventh annual Beanstalk Music & Mountains Festival. These were 30 minute tweener sets in between the Main Stage acts.

Taper Notes: Behind the board, DFC. Mic stand was set on a bar counter, they were raised around 6′ DIN configuration. The board feed does not come in until 3min 59sec of set 1. There were several power issues throughout the set. During “All I Need” the generator died three separate times, the final time I cut out the 4 minutes people were waiting for the power to come back. The power died during the jam of “Drive” in Set 3. It also died during “Tumble” in the 4th set however it only cut for the PA so I was able to compensate with the CA14 cards (AUD) feed. Thanks to FOH engineer Ed Myszkier for the board patch and mix!

Thank you to Goose and Beanstalk Music Festival for being cool with taping/sharing shows. Go see live music and support your local artists! #spacetapes
