What? You think you’re just going to wake up on the Saturday after an epic weekend of music and NOT get more #FreeMusic?! YOU FOOL! Check out my pull from Scott Law & Ross James’ Cosmic Twang opening things up at Ophelia’s!

What happens when you take a little bit ‘o country twang then dose it with psychedelic rock? You get the musical amalgam that is Scott Law & Ross James’ Cosmic Twang! Their set opening for Mihali was a fun run through classic standards with their own cosmic twist. Grateful Dead tunes like “Big Railroad Blues” start-off true-to-form but then evolve when it comes time for the jam segment into something far more exploratory. Cosmic Twang likes to take their listeners to deep space with their emotive, often times type-II-territory jamming, even in small doses. The set was a short opening one, so really we only got glimpses of what the band as capable of but the final two tunes of their set treated the packed Ophelia’s crowd to a sit-in of epic proportions when Phil Lesh made an appearance. Their take on “Unbroken Chain” was the highlight of the set by far and a beautiful moment for all those in attendance. Jamband fans have pretty much evolved passed everyone at once throwing up their cell phones and have learned (…for the most part) to engage with the show but when Phil came out I don’t think there was a person in the room who could help themselves. The phones were everywhere…you could probably piece together a 15 minute video of “Unbroken Chain” from 15 different cell phone feeds. But I don’t blame them, it’s why I tape! It’s not every day you get to record Phil Lesh three nights in a row in three different contexts, but it’s a weekend I’ll always remember and I’m glad I can share another piece of it with you all – Enjoy!
