I wanna knoooooow… would you love me if I hooked it up with a recording of Giant Walking Robots at Cervantes’ Other Side?
Kicking things off for Envy Alo’s album release party for The Ranch, Giant Walking Robots treated fans arriving early to a set featuring heavy hitting rhythms, sparkling guitar tones and all the dubby melodies one could ask for.
The band eased into their set with a brief jam to set the tone before blending into their first tune “Hold Us Down”. Afterwards, the band invited up former Amoramora keyboardist, Mitch Frank, for their song “Gold”, adding some welcome depth to the tune and rounding out the sound with a subtle yet impactful accent to not only the song itself, but also to its subsequent breakdown jam, which featured more electronic inspired tones. The band kicked up the pace for their next tune, “For Real”, which served as some nice dancing music for the Saturday crowd, and then they kept the upbeat vibe going with “Tonight”.
Next up, the band invited Mitch Frank back up for the two jammier moments of the set. First was “Night Time”, a tune that showed a more rock-like edge from the band, before sinking into a deeper electronica jam that would be the most expansive of their set. This was followed by “Walk Away”, which had the band coming back to their reggae dub roots and featured one last jam before the band closed out their set with a unique take on “Baba O’Riley”, featuring dub-style verses that made for a fun new interpretation of the live staple.
Giant Walking Robots put on an engaging opening set, performing their blend of reggae-dub and electronica with a tactful execution that sat well with the Saturday night Denver crowd. Their songs evoked a sense of ease, luring you into a groove with a mesmerizing strum and then hitting you with their big rhythms and an apropos drop. A solid choice for the dynamic listener who wants to both vibe and jive all in one sitting.
