#SpaceTapes….Got a band……Magic Beans performing night 1 at Beanstalk Music Festival got out of hand!
There’s no way around it, Beanstalk Music Festival has been my favorite part of the summer for the past three years running. It’s the purest form of what a music festival should be: an intimate setting, and a lineup composed of both nationally touring acts and local players all coalescing in a microcosm of genuine musical appreciation. Not to mention, no overlapping sets! The vibe is laid-back, the scenery represents the beauty that seems to be just about everywhere in Colorado, and the crowd is filled with the familiar faces of the front-range music scene that seems to be as tight-knit as any I’ve ever experienced. At its core, Magic Beans have cultivated one of the festival scene’s best-kept secrets.
For the first night of their fest, the Beans were ready to play, laying down what would end up being the jammiest set of the weekend. Songs like the opener, “Contraband” (off the band’s most recent release “Off Leash”), and the Casey Russell penned “Give me Something Real” both breached the 20-minute mark. “Mission” was just 20 seconds shy of the 20-minute mark before blending seamlessly into a long-time fan-favorite, “Dr. Bubbleman”, to close-out the set. In fact, none of the songs performed during this set were under 10 minutes–the kind of stat jam fans salivate over and mainstream music fans will never understand. The band was also aided by musical 6th man, Will Trask, who served as the percussive ying to Cody Wales‘ yang for the entire set; the nuanced dual-percussive attack provided a proverbial kick to round out the Beans’ signature sound. Even the less epic-in-length moments, such as newer tune “Frontier” (also off new album “Off Leash”), provided inspiring moments to break-up the jamming with poignant lyrics and soaring guitar moments.
Beanstalk is the place. If you’ve ever been, you know you’ve arrived. It’s that moment of clarity where you think there is some possible chance everything will be all right. It’s a musical mecca that deserves an annual trek, guided by the musical light of Magic Beans and company. If you’ve never been, let this set serve as a sample of what is possible any given night, and enjoy the sonic landscape laid out by one of Colorado’s best live acts performing in one of its most intimate and beautiful settings…then think…this was just night one!
