Well its freezing and snowing in Denver but it’s also #FreeMusicFriday so let’s bring the flowers anyway! Check out Mama Magnolia performing at The Bluebird Theater!
Mama Magnolia brought the house down at The Bluebird performing a raucous set of soulful R&B tunes laced with gospel, jazz and lounge overtones that coalesces in a very uniquely accessible sound. Songs like “Something About Fire”,
“Blink” and “There’s A Llivin'” show-off sophisticated songwriting and were executed beautifully. The band had some great cover takes as well. Their version of Dido’s “White Flag” put some NOLA flavor into the tune, accented by the well punctuated horns, patiently placed guitar notes and of course the incredible vocals really made the song work as a somewhat anthemic gospel tune. The set opening-and-closing “Aquarius (Let The Sunshine In)” featured once again the bands ability to make a song theirs with a solid re-worked composition. Loved their sound and glad I was finally able to experience one of their sets!
