Christmas is over but #TaperTuesday is just beginning – enjoy a gift of #FreeMusic – check out my pull from Particle headlining the second night of their two-night-run at Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple!

This set started with a bang, opening with a fierce rendition of a newer tune “Bravo Delta”; sending the crowd into a frenzy of synths and grizzly guitar riffs. Each time the riff would resolve itself, it felt like the crowd would get bigger. Once over, the crowd was primed and ready for the evening. Following a solid rendition of the talk-box laden “Organ Chords” the band launched into an epic rendition of “Metropolis” complete with a segue into the 80s R&B dance hit “No Parking On The Dance Floor” which even included some of the original samples. Not satisfied with a single epic in the first set, Particle treated fans to a stunning version of “Sun Mar 11”. The last 5 minutes of the jam contained some fantastic truly locked in playing from the whole band, moving as a unit, chugging through the rapid-fire gallop of guitar and synth. The set ended with a performance of a song the band originally wrote for the PS2/XBOX/PC game “Scarface: The World Is Yours” – so it was only appropriate that they jammed a brief version of “Rush, Rush” sandwiched in between the tune they created for the game modeled after the legendary cocaine kingpin.

The second set started off with “The Heist” which, like the first set opener “Bravo Delta”, brought us to intense peaks and coalesced with the distorted main riff in a tight drop. From there, the set went on a journey – starting with a fantastic rendition of the classic Particle tune “Kneeknocker” then dropping two newer tunes in the form of a Daft-Punk-esque vocalbox number called “Devils Work” and then a patiently built intro into another uptempo and at times evil sounding groove in “Accelerator”. The segment eventually segued into my personal favorite “Launchpad”. The band moved through the segment with confidence – building peaks and dropping drops almost at will. From “Kneeknocker” to “Launchpad” felt like a constant free-form thought, one where the speaker was barely stopping to breathe, bursting with enthusiasm and purpose. By the end, I was shocked to realize the band had been playing for 40+ minutes and the crowd was raring for more. The set closed out with a tune called “The Wire” which was an upbeat whirlwind of synth and guitar interplay which wrapped up the set nicely. They encored with “The Elevator” which was another treat from the band’s first record and very well received by the crowd. Particle came to get down in Denver and while I only caught night 2, I left thoroughly impressed. With a new record coming out in early 2018, I hope to see them around more often!
