Last Thursday for their weekly throw-down at Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple, Phour Point O had a little something extra up their sleeve. Starting the night off right, the band kicked into top gear immediately with a high octane take on “Birds Of A Feather” which featured a nice improv section to get things settled into a nice groove from the get-go. Next-up was “Chalk Dust Torture” which featured a “Simpsons” secret language cue as well as a tip-of-the-hat to newly local jamband The Jauntee with some quotes from their song “Blowing Up The B Line” courtesy of their biggest fan Ben Rafferty who was playing “Good ‘Ol Boy” throughout soundcheck which if you weren’t familiar is another The Jauntee favorite. Next was “Sneakin’ Sallly Through The Alley” which contained a nice little vocal jam. “AC/DC Bag” got some throwback jam-work which is always nice to hear since Phish themselves apparently forgot or do not like jamming this song out anymore. The second set is where things get VERY interesting. It started with the members of Soule Monde (Ray Paczkowski & Russ Lawton) (also of Trey Anastasiuo Band fame) and Mike Pedersen (Phour Point O) on guitar performing as a trio. They played three tunes (“Bernard”, “Allah Uya” and “La Grange”) which absolutely tore the place down. Soule Monde is a fantastic jazz fusion duo and the addition of Mike on guitar added some psychedelic flavor to the mix. All three songs were loose but purposeful and kept the audience enthralled throughout, begging for more by the end. Fantastic and professional musicianship treating the tiny Be On Key crowd, another one of those “This is why I tape shows” moments from a Denver venue that has already given me so many :). Before they left, they graced us with one more tune in the form of “First Tube” which both of them play on an extremely regular basis with TAB and were able to show the Phour Point O boys exactly how it was done. Invigorated by the impromptu Soule Monde trio mini-set and the sit-in on “First Tube” the band played with newfound inspiration as we received the jam segment of the night in the “Simple > Buried Alive” performance and another foray into psychedelic exploration with a patient and funkified to the nines version of “2001”. I don’t know what happened to my recording but for some reason the very tail end of “The Lizards” was cut. Too much fire for the recorder to handle!

Show Notes: This show was a part of Phour Point O’s weekly Thursday residency at Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple. Soule Monde was in town opening for Spafford over at The Ogden Theatre and came over after their set to play with Phour Point O for the beginning of the second set.
[1] “Chalkdust Torture” contained a “Simpsons” secret language cue and contained “Blowing Up The B Line” (The Jauntee) quotes from Ben.
[2] “Bernard” and “Allah Uya” are Soule Monde originals. Both songs and “La Grange” were performed by Russ Lawton (Soule Monde) on drums, Ray Paczkowski (Soule Monde) on keys and Mike Pederson (Phour Point O) on guitar.
[3] “First Tube” was performed by all the members of Phour Point O and Soule Monde.
[4] “Suzy Greenberg” featured Cody Whales (The Magic Beans) on drums.
[5] “2001” featured Cody Whales (The Magic Beans) on drums and included a brief “Werewolves In London” jam.
[6] “The Lizards” contained a “Star Wars” jam.

Taper Notes: DFC FOB ORTF mics raised around 8′. The end of “The Lizards” was cut for some reason, possibly an issue with the recorder so it was faded out to minimize the abruptness. It is only the very end.
