It’s a rainy #TaperThursday in Denver, but with showers bring flowers and #FreeMusic#amirite?! Check out The Sweet Lillies opening things up for the 26th annual “Microbreweries For The Environment” Festival at Boulder Theater!

There is no better way to start a beer festival than with the best drinking music around…bluegrass! Kicking things off, The Sweet Lillies brought their blend of soulful mountaingrass to a crowd of excited beer drinkers ready to dance. The set opened with a somewhat dark and minor tune about rising above adversity appropriately titled “I Rise”. Quickly into the first tune, the band showed off their penchant for injecting popular rap, hip hop and r&b lyrics into their songs. If you’re a fan of artists like Atmosphere, Erykah Badu and TLC, you’ll have constant smile throughout the whole set as they pepper their verses with the overt-hip-hop and rap references. There were some solid covers including a rap-laced take on the Eagles’ tune “Seven Bridges Road” as well as a fantastic cover of “Ragdoll” inspired by their recent tour with Jeff Austin (formerly of Yonder Mountain String Band). The set closed with their original “Weeping Willow” which had a vintage motown structure with a classic hook that will resonate with anyone who has ever felt frustrated with a lack of communication in a relationship. Something you don’t always hear in bluegrass is any sort of horn work but The Sweet Lillies like to buck the archetype and good for them because the trumpet solo fits in very nicely with the song. Really awesome set to open up the festival, glad I was able to finally catch The Sweet Lillies. If you’re a musician who plays bluegrass, check out their bi-monthly pick at Beyond The Mountain Brewing Company on Wednesdays from 5-7!
