It’s #TaperThursday and I bet you’re thinking “Damn I wish I was on vacation” – well lets turn this into #ThrowbackThursday as I once again dig into last year’s archives and pull out another killer Cycles show, this time headlining their record release party at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom(Other Side)!
This was one of the more fun crowds I’d experienced at a Cycles show. The diehard Cycles fans had shown up wearing their best vacation gear to celebrate the band’s “Vacation” record release. This show has one of the earliest (if not first?) versions of The Beatles psychedelic ode-to-the-voyage cover “Tomorrow Never Knows”. An early version of “Ride Again” using the “Target Marget” lyrics before the name-change (then subsequent name-change-back). An epic “Tucker’s Pet Weed” which included a “Waterfalls” (TLC) jam. There were some fantastic sit-ins as well. A cool take on “Game Show” which featured Kevin Supina on saxophone which added a brand new layer to the sound. The saxophone pulled the song in new directions especially during the breakdown jam where everything blended together perfectly in a feverish segment that showcased solid locked-in playing. As if that weren’t enough, Casey Russell from Magic Beans also joined in on the fun, slaying versions of “Figure It Out” and “Chapanga”. I always love when Casey sits in because he fits in with their sound so well. His playing knows when to be zany, when to be funky, and when to do it all in the right improv moment. Always a pleasure seeing him sit-in with anyone but with Cycles there’s always just that little extra something. The music was all so stupendous but probably the biggest appearance of the evening was Michael Bender‘s Hawaiian themed burlesque show during “Party Boy”. This uploaded is dedicated to his memory. Nothing happened to him, he’s totally fine but that was just one hell of a memory. The encore was no slouch either, “Be Yourself -> Ziggy Stardust” which was probably the jam of the evening. While it wasn’t incredibly long, once they sink into the groove of the jam they are able to really create some beautiful music. Another awesome Cycles show for the books – Enjoy!

Show Notes: This show was a record release party for Cycles’ new album “VACATION”. Envy Alo and Tenth Mountain Division opened the show.
[1] Prior to “Party Boy”, Patrick introduced Michael Bender to the stage as “Their friend who called off work and is on vacation”. Michael Bender proceeded to come out dressed as if he were on vacation sporting a Hawaiian shirt, straw hat, grass skirt and was tossing leis into the crowd as the band played “Party Boy”. He proceeded to take off the Hawaiian shirt to show a bikini top underneath which was also thrown off before exiting.
[2] “Game Show” featured Kevin Supina on saxophone. The lyrics were also changed to “A brand new horn!”.
[3] “Waterfalls” contained “Tucker’s Pet Weed” teases.
[4] “Figure It Out” and “Chapanga” featured Casey Russell (The Magic Beans) on keys.
Thank you to Cycles and Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom for being cool with taping/sharing shows. Go see live music and tip your bartenders! #spacetapes
