Kitchen Dwellers | 2019-05-02 | Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO [AUD]

I’ll empty my pockets and break down the land. You better listen when I tell you to check out Kitchen Dwellers performing at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre!

Opening up a monumental day of music that witnessed their debut performance at the legendary venue, Kitchen Dwellers treated fans arriving early at Red Rocks to a set filled with their patented brand of impassioned songwriting and psychedelic nu-grass sensibilities. An early start-time and an unfortunate production delay did not deter their fans from making it into the venue just-in-time for the opening flurry of notes of “Farmer’s Son”. As the band picked along and I glanced across the crowd, the band’s fans were undeniable. Thanks to Beyond The Mountain Brewing Company brewmaster Chuck Hixon, Dwellers fans showed up in their Kitchen’s best, as he distributed a box full of white aprons in the parking lot. Experience is everything, and taping a set while dancing in an apron at Red Rocks is one I won’t soon forget. Thanks Chuck!

Chuck!

The set was filled with highlights as the band constantly segued from one song to the next with a visceral determination and fluid form. From their pointed picking in their instrumental “Sunday Funday”, to the brutal honesty of “Farmer’s Son”, to the stoic chorus of “Mountain”, the Kitchen Dwellers are masters of dynamics. Both in their songwriting and their playing, their music keeps an emotional finger on the pulse of the crowd and beats with them. Anytime they break a song down, it feels like a volcano biding its time, building patiently before they peak with an inspiring eruption of furious picking. When they sing the line “Before the sun goes down, we’re gonna burn this whole place down”, I think the entire crowd believed them. I know I did.

The Kitchen Dwellers provide an evolution to the nu-grass genre with a nuanced, slightly-psychedelically-tinged attack, and refreshingly authentic yet approachable song-writing that sets them apart from the plethora of bluegrass bands that populate the jam scene. This is what has built them such a devote following in the front-range, and their set at Red Rocks is another achievement in their ever-growing legacy.
